Aside from the debate on political responsibility and ethical standards, abstinence is only rarely preached, and the majority of literary texts extol drunkenness. This particularly applies to the poetry of Tao Yuanming, who criticized the lack of possibilities for agreement between advocates of abstinence and supporters of alcohol in his poem cycle Yin jiu ershi shou (No. 13), published in 403. Comparing two men, one who “drinks in solitude” and the other who is “sober all year round,” Yuanming said he preferred the first because his relaxed attitude was simply “wittier and more stimulating.”
